Now we will make some "folds" in the material for our dress and sleeves. Starting with the dress selection...reduce the size of your airbrush tool to "30" and the opacity to "20". Make some sweeping lines following the curves in the shape of the dress. Do the same thing for the sleeves, but reduce the size of your airbrush tool to about "10".
When you are happy with the shading you have done apply a slight inner bevel to each part of your dress using the specifications below left, and your bear should resemble the image below right:
An alternative method to shading a patterned image is to use the "Retouch Tool"... .
There are several applications that I have found useful...firstly, when I am trying to put shading on a very complicated pattern, such as the dress for my "Mrs. Santa Clause" bear...I used the "Darken RGB" and "Lighten RGB" option with varying brush sizes (3-15), and varying the opacity and density in this range of values (30-75). The combinations and permutations of using this part of the tool are too complex to give screensamples for each, but I have given you a couple of examples below:
Another use for the retouch tool, was in the shading of some very fine lines that I put below the waistband (for gathers), and the sharp creases on the sleeves on the pinafore. I first used the paintbrush at a medium grey (sizes 2 and 1) for the lines for the creases...and then I used the "soften retouch mode" to blend them. I also added some lighter grey shading with the airbrush tool to these lines.
After the above I used the "inner bevel" (with the previous settings provided) on each layer, and then added a small drop shadow on those parts that fell on the dress.
